US Vice President JD Vance said a “crazy person” attempted to break into his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, after a suspect was arrested following a security incident at the property. Vance and his family were not at home at the time, and no injuries were reported.
“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly. We weren’t even home as we had returned already to DC,” Vance said in a post on X.

The Vice President also said his family wanted to shield their children from the harsh realities of public life and questioned the news value of circulating photographs that showed broken windows at the residence.
Local media identified the suspect as William DeFoor, 26, who has been charged in connection with the attempted break-in. Reports said he allegedly used a hammer to damage the windows of the house.
Vance had earlier been at his golf club in West Palm Beach following a meeting with US President Donald Trump as Washington planned strikes on Venezuela. He later returned to Cincinnati after monitoring developments.
A federal law enforcement source told CNN that DeFoor is in custody and that authorities have launched an urgent investigation. Images from local outlets showed window damage, though officials have not detailed exactly how the breach occurred.
The US Secret Service said, “The residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and the Vice President and his family were not in Ohio.” The agency added that it is “coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the US Attorney’s Office as charging decisions are reviewed.”
Vance, a former Ohio senator, purchased the Cincinnati home in the East Walnut Hills neighbourhood in 2018, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
