Travellers planning a trip to Mexico’s scenic Baja California Sur in 2026 should be prepared for a slightly higher tourist tax. The state government has officially increased its ‘Embrace It’ tourist tax, with the revised fee coming into effect from January 1, 2026.

Under the updated structure, the tourist levy has been raised from MXN 470 (INR 2,420.32) to MXN 488 (INR 2,513.01) per visitor. Authorities say the increase is aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure, supporting local cultural initiatives, and funding environmental conservation projects across the region.

What Is the Embrace It Tourist Tax?

Introduced in July 2025, the Embrace It tourist tax applies to all visitors aged 12 years and above who stay in Baja California Sur for more than 24 hours. Day visitors are exempt from paying the fee.

Travellers are required to pay the tax either before arrival or upon entering Baja California Sur via the official Embrace It tourist tax website. Once payment is completed, visitors receive a QR code via email, which must be presented at designated entry points across the region, in line with local regulations.

Authorities Highlight Positive Response from Travellers

According to a report by the Mexican Press Agency, tourism officials have expressed satisfaction with how international visitors have responded to the tax.

Hugo Chapoy Córdova, Director of Revenue at Tourist Tax México, said, “We are very satisfied with the acceptance that Embrace It has had among international visitors. The aggregate data confirm an orderly pattern, with payments made in advance, greater activity on weekdays, and stays with well-defined patterns. This reinforces the responsible tourism approach promoted by Baja California Sur”.

Officials believe the structured payment system and advance compliance reflect growing awareness around sustainable tourism practices among global travellers.

Why the Tax Has Been Increased

The latest adjustment represents an increase of 18 pesos compared to the 2025 rate. The funds collected through the Embrace It tax are earmarked for environmental protection and conservation, upgrading tourism infrastructure, supporting social and cultural programmes, and promoting sustainable tourism across local communities.

The state government says the revised fee aligns with global trends seen in high-value, nature-focused destinations that prioritise long-term sustainability over mass tourism.

Why Baja California Sur Remains a Top Travel Destination

Despite the marginal tax hike, Baja California Sur continues to rank among Mexico’s most sought-after travel destinations. Known for its dramatic landscapes and diverse experiences, the region offers everything from pristine beaches and cliffside viewpoints to desert hikes and marine adventures.

Popular spots include Cabo San Lucas, Loreto, La Paz, Todos Santos, Magdalena Bay, Isla Espíritu Santo, and Canyon de la Zorra. Travellers can enjoy whale watching, snorkelling, water sports, vibrant nightlife, and rich local culture, making the destination appealing across seasons.

What Travellers Should Keep in Mind

With the updated tax now in place, visitors planning trips in 2026 are advised to:

  • Complete the Embrace It tax payment in advance.
  • Save the QR code received after payment.
  • Factor the revised fee into travel budgets.

While the increase is modest, it reflects Baja California Sur’s broader strategy to balance tourism growth with environmental responsibility and community development.

For travellers seeking natural beauty, adventure, and sustainable travel experiences, Baja California Sur remains well worth the visit—even with the updated tourist tax in effect.
