In a bid to strengthen its cultural identity and promote heritage-based tourism, the Delhi government has launched the Tourism and Heritage Fellowship Programme. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on July 14, 2025, the initiative will select 40 young professionals annually and offer them a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000.

The programme aims to tap into the potential of local youth and develop a cohort of trained professionals who can actively contribute to the capital’s tourism and heritage initiatives. As per the official announcement, the fellowship reflects the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision by encouraging homegrown talent and reducing reliance on external consultants.

"This fellowship offers a platform for young individuals to work closely on government projects and contribute towards making Delhi a vibrant, inclusive and globally recognised tourism destination," she said.

To be implemented by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), the programme is open to citizens under the age of 35 who hold at least a graduate degree. Preference will be given to candidates with qualifications in tourism and a minimum of one year of formal experience in the sector. Proficiency in Hindi and English, along with strong digital skills, is also essential.

Participants will support a wide range of government-led tourism activities. These include heritage walks, guided tours, content creation, event coordination, tourist centre operations, and the promotion of iconic sites such as Dilli Haat and the Garden of Five Senses. Fellows will also assist with film shoot coordination and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism initiatives.

The one-year fellowship will culminate in a formal certificate of completion. Applications are expected to open in the coming weeks, with the first cohort commencing training later this year.

Chief Minister Gupta described the initiative as a meaningful opportunity for youth to engage directly with heritage preservation efforts, "A strong platform for youth to directly engage with the government and become agents of change."
