"The Home Ministry today issued the gazette notification banning all activities of the Awami League, its all front, associate and brotherly organisations,” Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd.) Jahangir Alam told a media briefing here.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain passed the order after considering three separate chargesheets filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.
“The commission has formed a seven-member committee to conduct the inquiry,” Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director General Akhtar Hossain told reporters.
In the application, the ACC said Hasina and others are trying to transfer the money from these accounts. So, an order is needed to prevent them from doing so.
Hasina, 77, has been living in India since August 5 last year, after she fled Bangladesh following a massive student-led protest that toppled her Awami League's 16-year regime.
The South Asian nation has been in charge of a caretaker government led by Nobel Peace laureate Yunus since August, when mass protests forced then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to neighbouring India.
Witnesses said several thousand protesters, some armed with sticks, hammers, and other tools, gathered around the historic house and independence monument, while others brought a crane and excavator to demolish the building.
Yunus has called for an investigation into the properties of British minister and her family, indicating that they may have acquired them through unlawful means during her aunt Sheikh Hasina's tenure as Bangladesh PM.
The development comes a day after Bangladesh’s interim government said it had revoked the passport of the ousted PM and 96 others over their alleged involvement in July killings.
The commission said it recorded 1,676 complaints of enforced disappearances and so far examined 758, of which 27 per cent of the victims never returned.
