Bangladeshi actress Nusraat Faria, who gained popularity for playing the role of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's biopic ‘Mujib: The Making of a Nation’, was arrested at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday, as per local media reports.
The Dhaka Tribune reported that the arrest is allegedly due to her involvement in an attempt to murder case during the nationwide protests in Bangladesh against Sheikh Hasina that happened in July 2024.
According to the website of Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo, the 31-year-old actress was arrested at the immigration checkpoint while she was leaving for Thailand.
A local news portal bdnews24.com quoted Inspector Sujan Haque of Vatara Police Station as saying that Nusraat Faria was arrested in the afternoon on Sunday. He said, "Our team went to the airport to get her based on information from Immigration Police. A few days ago, a court approved an attempted murder case against her. She has been shown arrested in that case."
Nusraat Faria arrest: What are the charges against her?
As per Dhaka Tribune report, during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement's protests last year, a case had been filed against 17 actors, including Nusraat, for the alleged attempted murder of a student in Bangaldesh's capital Dhaka's Vatara area.
The anti-government protests had ultimately led to Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and her subsequent departure from Bangladesh and exile in India.Who Is Nusraat Faria?
Nusraat Faria began her career as a radio jockey and presenter. She has hosted television shows and modelled in advertisements.
Nusrat debuted in the film Aashiqui in 2015, where she played the lead role opposite Ankush Hazra. She has several hits to her name like Hero 420 (2016), Badsha - The Don (2016), Premi O Premi (2017) and Boss 2: Back to Rule (2017).
However, she rose to fame after essaying the role of Sheikh Hasina in 'Mujib: The Making of a Nation', which was released in 2023. The film was based on the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman — the founding father and first president of Bangladesh — who is popularly known as Bangabandhu. The film was co-produced by Bangladesh and India, and was directed by Shyam Benegal with Arifin Shuvoo in the titular role.
