Addressing an industry body event in Mumbai on Wednesday, Scindia also urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to come forward and participate in the "huge" opportunities in the civil aviation space in the country.

The government, he said, is committed to improving connectivity on both regional and long haul international routes, and has set a target of raising the number of airports to 220 by 2025 from 136 at present.

Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw, Dharmendra Pradhan also attended the occasion over virtual platforms. IndiGo Airlines will be operating flights between Bhubaneswar and Jaipur thrice a week Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

"Airfares are tumbling (on domestic routes). Airfare between some cities is cheaper than second-class air-conditioned train tickets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants people wearing slippers to fly. That is why the government is working to set up airports in small cities as well," Scindia said.
