Microsoft has confirmed that support for Windows 10 will officially end on October 14, 2025. While devices running the operating system will continue to function, they will no longer receive feature updates, security patches, or technical assistance. To help users transition, Microsoft is introducing an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program alongside options to upgrade to Windows 11 or move to cloud-based solutions.
Extended Security Updates for Windows 10
The Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is designed to provide an additional layer of protection for users who need more time before switching to newer systems.
For personal PCs, enrollment will be available directly through Settings, with three options:
• Free via Windows Backup
• Free using Microsoft Rewards points
• Paid at $30 per year
For commercial devices, the ESU program is priced at $61 per device annually, renewable for up to three years. Coverage will run from October 15, 2025, to October 13, 2026.
Cloud and virtual environments will have ESU included at no additional cost, ensuring devices accessing Windows 11 Cloud PCs through Windows 365 or virtual machines receive automatic security updates.
Windows Defender Antivirus support
Microsoft has also committed to providing Security Intelligence Updates for Microsoft Defender Antivirus on Windows 10 through October 2028, giving users an added buffer of protection even after general support ends.
Why upgrade to Windows 11
Microsoft is encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11 or Copilot+ PCs to take advantage of enhanced security and performance. The company reports that Windows 11 delivers up to 62% fewer security incidents, three times fewer firmware attacks, and up to 2.3 times faster performance compared to Windows 10. Organizations can benefit from 50% faster workflows and a 250% return on investment.
Copilot+ PCs and AI features
For users ready to move to new hardware, Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11 devices from partners including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Surface are available. These devices unlock AI-powered tools such as Recall, Click to Do, Cocreator in Paint, Restyle in Photos, and Copilot Vision. Microsoft and its partners are also offering trade-in and recycling programs to ease the transition.
