Truecaller launches AI Call Scanner feature on Android app: How it works and other details

Truecaller, the popular call ID app has introduced a new feature named ‘AI Call Scanner.’ This feature is currently rolling out to all Truecaller Premium users who are using the latest Android app version (14.6)  and will be first available in the US, followed by other countries including India.

Truecaller’s ‘AI Call Scanner’ feature: How to use it

The ‘AI Call Scanner’ feature has been designed to combat the growing threat of AI-generated voice scams by differentiating between human and AI-generated voices. As per Truecaller, if a person receives a suspicious call, they must tap a dedicated button within the app’s interface to start the identification process.

The caller’s voice will then be recorded and the voice sample is then processed by Truecaller’s AI model, distinguishing between human speech from AI-generated voices. Further, Trucellaer added that while the entire process takes a few seconds to complete, this feature has a high level of accuracy.

Moreover, Truecaller also highlighted that multiple bad actors are using generic AI voices currently that mimic human voices. By taking samples of people's voices from social media videos, the AI-generated voice is then used to call victims to attempt spam to relatives or known users of the persons whose voices have been cloned.

Truecaller has also pointed out that these scams were initially started in 2019 and have risen exponentially in the following years. Truecaller is also exploring ways to further improve this feature and release it later on the iOS app.
