Truecaller adds AI features to fight scams and provide real-time context for unknown calls

The app is rolling out new AI-powered features that provide deeper context on incoming calls. Instead of just showing “spam” or “unknown,” Truecaller can now flag potential fraud, highlight suspicious behavior, and even suggest the type of caller.

For years, Truecaller has been the go-to app for figuring out who’s calling. But now, the company wants to take things several steps further. With over 450 million active users worldwide, Truecaller has announced that it’s no longer just about telling you a name when your phone rings—it’s about giving you the full story behind the call.

The app is rolling out new AI-powered features that provide deeper context on incoming calls. Instead of just showing “spam” or “unknown,” Truecaller can now flag potential fraud, highlight suspicious behavior, and even suggest the type of caller—whether it’s a delivery service, a customer support line, or an insurance company. In short, it wants to tell you not just who is calling, but why.

What makes this upgrade interesting is how fast the information comes through. The insights are generated in real time, powered by AI models that continuously learn from billions of calls, messages, and user reports every day. So, if a number has been linked to scams in one part of the world, Truecaller can proactively warn users in other regions too.

There’s also a clever new feature that might save you some scrolling: AI-generated summaries of user comments. If hundreds of people have flagged a number with warnings, Truecaller condenses that into a single line while the phone is still ringing. That way, you know exactly what others are saying before you decide to pick up.

The timing of these updates is no coincidence. Phone scams are exploding globally. In 2024 alone, Truecaller says it identified over 56 billion spam and fraud calls. A report from the Global Anti-Scam Alliance pegged worldwide scam losses at $1.03 trillion last year. With fraudsters getting more creative by the minute, caller intelligence needs to be just as adaptive.

Truecaller’s Global CEO, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, summed it up best: “Knowing who’s calling is only part of the story. In today’s world, context is everything.”

By leaning into AI, Truecaller is positioning itself as more than just a caller ID app—it’s becoming a real-time safety net for the modern phone user. For anyone tired of mystery numbers and scam attempts, this new version might just be the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.
