Truecaller has launched a free voicemail feature in India, aiming to make it easier for users to avoid nuisance and spam calls without worrying about missing something important. The new feature is currently available for Android users and is built directly into the Truecaller app.
Unlike traditional voicemail services that require users to dial a separate number or remember a PIN, Truecaller’s voicemail works in a much simpler way. Messages are recorded, stored and played directly on the phone, making the entire experience faster and far less frustrating. Truecaller says users can set it up in just a few seconds, and there’s no limit on the number of voicemails they can receive.
One of the key highlights of the new voicemail service is instant AI-powered transcription. As soon as someone leaves a voicemail, the message is converted into text within seconds. This allows users to read voicemails quietly when they’re in meetings, travelling, or simply don’t want to listen to an audio message. The transcription feature supports 12 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Nepali, Punjabi, Sanskrit and Urdu, making it accessible to a wide range of users across the country.
Spam and scam protection is another big focus. Since voicemail is integrated with Truecaller’s existing spam detection system, calls that are identified as spam can be automatically filtered. This means users don’t have to answer suspicious calls just to check what the caller wants — they can let the call go to voicemail and decide later whether it’s worth engaging with.
Truecaller has also taken a privacy-first approach with this feature. All voicemail messages are stored locally on the device, rather than on network servers, giving users more control over their recordings. Additional features like adjustable playback speed and smart message categorisation make it easier to manage voicemails without clutter.
Commenting on the launch, Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala said traditional voicemail systems were built for a very different time and no longer fit how people communicate today. He said the company wanted to remove the friction associated with old voicemail services by making the experience free, device-native and seamlessly integrated into everyday calling.
With this launch, Truecaller is clearly expanding beyond its original identity as a caller ID and spam-blocking app. By placing voicemail at the centre of the calling experience and combining it with AI transcription and spam protection, the company is positioning itself as a daily-use communication platform.
For users in India, where spam and fraud calls are a persistent problem, Truecaller’s free voicemail could offer a practical way to screen calls, stay informed, and avoid unwanted conversations — all without missing messages that actually matter.
