Rain brings relief to sweltering Bengaluru

Many parts of the city received rains after 160 days, says private weather blogger

Rains finally arrived in Bengaluru on May 2, bringing the city some respite from the excruciating heat.

"After almost 160 days, many areas in the city are finally receiving rainfall," noted Namma Karnataka Weather on X (formerly Twitter).

Areas such as Padmanabhanagar, KR Puram, Hoodi, Mahadevapura, Banaswadi, JP Nagar, Vasant Nagar, Jayanagar, Wilson Garden, VV Puram, BTM Layout, Koramangala, Cox Town, and Frazer Town received rain on Thursday evening. In Banaswadi, power supply was disrupted due to heavy rain and winds.

According to the Met department, Bengaluru city reported a record temperature of 38.2°C on May 2, which is 3.8 °C above the normal. The all-time record maximum temperature for May in Bengaluru was 38.9°C, registered on May 22, 1931.

Met department officials have forecasted a generally cloudy sky with light rain on May 3, partly cloudy skies on May 4 and May 5, followed by rain with thundershowers from May 6 to May 8.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city's observatory did not record any rainfall in April, marking the first such instance since 1983. While some areas received precipitation on April 19 and 20, it went unrecorded by the city's observatory. The last recorded rainfall by Bengaluru IMD was around 106.6mm in November 2023. Since then, there has been minimal rainfall: 0.7mm in December 2023, 2mm in January 2024, and no trace of rain in February, March, and April 2024.
