OpenAI has reportedly fired a senior policy executive who opposed the introduction of an “adult mode” for ChatGPT, amid a discrimination complaint raised by a colleague.
Ryan Beiermeister, who served as OpenAI’s vice president of product policy, was terminated in January after a male colleague accused her of sex discrimination, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Beiermeister has strongly denied the allegation.
“The allegation that I discriminated against anyone is absolutely false,” Beiermeister told the Journal.
OpenAI did not respond to requests for comment, nor had Beiermeister responded to outreach at the time of publication.
The Journal reports that Beiermeister’s dismissal followed internal criticism she raised over a planned ChatGPT feature internally referred to as “adult mode”. The feature is expected to introduce erotic content into the chatbot experience. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, who oversees consumer-facing products, has previously said the company plans to launch the feature during the first quarter of this year.
According to the report, Beiermeister and other employees expressed concerns about the potential impact of the feature on certain user groups, though the specific nature of those concerns has not been publicly detailed.
OpenAI, however, has pushed back against any suggestion that Beiermeister’s firing was connected to her objections. The company reportedly told staff that she had “made valuable contributions during her time at OpenAI” and that her departure was not related to any issues she raised internally.
Beiermeister was dismissed following a leave of absence, the Journal said.
OpenAI has faced repeated questions over where it draws the line between user freedom and platform responsibility, particularly as it pushes ChatGPT into new commercial and cultural territory.
Beiermeister joined OpenAI after several years in senior roles at major technology firms. Her LinkedIn profile shows she previously spent four years on Meta’s product team and more than seven years at Palantir, a company known for its work with government and enterprise clients.
The reported dismissal also comes at a sensitive moment for OpenAI, which is balancing rapid product development with regulatory attention, public trust issues and internal governance challenges as ChatGPT’s global user base continues to expand.
