Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang disclosed that the company has over 10,000 engineers in India. He said this in a fireside chat with Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani at the Nvidia AI Summit in Mumbai on October 24, discussing AI and India’s role in the nascent technology.
Ambani was speaking on how India can leverage its demographic dividend and hone 2 lakh people in the country to leadership roles. To this, Huang remarked on his company’s India headcount.
Interestingly, a blog post by the company just two days ago read that it has over 4,000 employees in India, across six locations.
In 2023, the world's “hottest chip company” had 3,800 employees in the country across four development centres — Gurugram, Hyderabad, Pune and Bengaluru. And a large chunk of this, over 2,200, were based in India’s Silicon Valley. While speaking to journalists in 2023, Huang had said the company would be looking to double or triple its headcount here but did not offer any timeline.
World over, there is unity in the saying that India has an incredible technology talent pool and it will only further grow in the future. For example, semiconductor company AMD on November 28 unveiled its largest global design centre in Bengaluru, spanning 500,000 square feet and housing around 3,000 engineers.
Meanwhile, Huang’s India visit marks many important developments. Nvidia announced a slew of partnerships just before the CEO was about to deliver a speech. The company announced strategic partnerships with Indian IT firms and other companies at the Summit.
Tata Consultancy Services launched a new Nvidia business unit to speed up the industry-wide adoption of AI by its customers. Huang said service partners from Wipro to Infosys to TCS, are working with Nvidia to take AI models and the AI infrastructure out to the world's enterprises.
Tata Communications also unveiled an AI infrastructure partnership with Nvidia for accelerated computing. Additionally, the company is working with data centre firm Yotta to build a fundamental computing infrastructure in India.
