The next session of the National Lok Adalat will be held on March 14, offering vehicle owners an opportunity to resolve pending traffic challans through a simplified legal process. The one-day initiative allows eligible challans to be settled without lengthy court proceedings.
Lok Adalats are organised under the Legal Services Authorities to help clear minor disputes, including traffic violations. During the event, motorists can settle eligible e-challans and in some cases receive reduced penalties depending on the nature of the offence.
National Lok Adalat sessions are conducted periodically across courts in India to address pending cases quickly. Traffic challans form a major category of cases taken up during these sessions.
Motorists with pending challans can register for the Lok Adalat and have their cases reviewed by a bench that typically includes a judicial officer and a representative from the legal services authority. If both parties agree to the settlement, the challan is resolved the same day.
How to check pending traffic challans
Before registering, vehicle owners should first verify whether they have any unpaid challans linked to their vehicle.
You can check pending challans through official portals by following these steps:
Visit the traffic police website of your state or the Parivahan e-challan portal.
Enter your vehicle registration number, driving licence number, or challan number.
View the list of pending challans associated with the vehicle.
Confirm that the challans are eligible for settlement through Lok Adalat.
Only challans that appear on official systems can be processed during the Lok Adalat.
How to register for Lok Adalat
Eligible vehicle owners must register in advance for the Lok Adalat session.
Visit the official traffic police or Legal Services Authority website.
Select the Lok Adalat registration option.
Enter the vehicle details, challan numbers, and contact information.
Submit the form and download the confirmation slip or token.
Walk-in registrations are usually not accepted, so completing the online registration is necessary.
Documents required on the day
On March 14, registered applicants must visit the assigned court complex with relevant documents, including:
Vehicle registration certificate (RC)
Driving licence
Valid insurance papers
Pollution under control (PUC) certificate
Challan receipts or details
The Lok Adalat bench will review the case and determine the final settlement amount.
Which challans are eligible
Lok Adalat generally accepts minor and compoundable offences, including:
Driving without helmet or seatbelt
Over-speeding
Jumping traffic signals
Wrong parking
Missing number plates
Driving without valid PUC certificate
Ignoring traffic signs
In some cases, driving without a licence may also be considered.
Serious violations such as drunk driving, hit-and-run cases, or challans issued in other states are typically not eligible. Cases already pending in regular courts are also excluded.
Once a settlement is reached and the revised fine is paid, the challan is marked as resolved in the official system.
