Microsoft announces new Gears of War game: Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return

Microsoft has announced a new entry into the Gear of War franchise with ‘Gears of War: E-Day’. The tech giant revealed the new Gears of War game at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024.

Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel to the first Gears of War game that came out in 2006 and had Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as playable characters.

‘Gears of War: E-Day’ refers to Emergence Day in the game’s storyline and will tell the origin story of the acclaimed third-person shooter. The upcoming Gears of War title is set 14 years before the events of the first Gears of War game, Emergence Day being its focus.

Gears of War E-Day: An Origin Story

The Xbox official announce trailer of Gears of War: E-Day wastes no time and within seconds, we get to see a young Marcus Fenix in close-quarters combat with a Locust Drone, who looks physically more powerful than the beefed-up Marcus himself. From the looks of it, it is the first time Marcus has encountered these beings and he is lucky to survive.

In the end, Marcus does manage to blow out the brains of the Locust Drone but the floor of the room both have been fighting in caves in. Marcus grabs hold of a pipe in the nick of time to save himself from disappearing into the huge maw of the earth. Next, we see Dom Santiago giving him a much-needed helping hand, quite literally. Dom pulls him up and gives him his iconic headscarf. Emergence Day is here and both heroes will have to prepare for what comes next.

Emergence Day is when the Locust Horde, a race of genetically altered humans, emerges from the bowels of the earth, plunging humanity into a new war.

The trailer ends with Dom Santiago and Marcus overlooking a city being swallowed up into the massive rift that caves in the entire ground it is built on.

Both Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago are veterans of the Pendulum Wars that took place before the events of the first Gears of Wars game happened. The Locust Horde invasion is something new they’ll have to deal with.

Gears of War E-Day is being made using Unreal Engine 5

Gears of War E-Day is being developed by The Coalition and will be published by Xbox Game Studios. According to Microsoft, the action-adventure shooter is being built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 and will deliver “unprecedented graphical fidelity”.

Gears of War E Day will launch exclusively for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
