Meta cuts 600 jobs in latest layoff; now employees are using AI to write performance reviews

Meta has laid off around 600 employees as part of an AI restructuring drive, even as remaining staff begin using the company’s in-house AI chatbot to draft performance reviews.

Meta Platforms has initiated another round of job cuts, affecting nearly 600 employees across multiple AI-related divisions. The move, confirmed by company insiders, follows months of workforce reshuffling as Meta aims to streamline teams focused on artificial intelligence research and development.

Layoffs and restructuring
According to reports, the layoffs span departments including AI infrastructure, research, and product integration teams. The company is shifting resources toward “superintelligence” projects under Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang. He stated internally that the goal is to create smaller, faster-moving teams with greater impact per employee.
The reorganization comes amid Meta’s continued investment in advanced AI systems, despite recent job cuts. Sources familiar with the matter said the layoffs are not a sign of reduced funding but rather a reallocation toward high-priority areas such as large-scale model training and AI-driven applications.

Employees turning to AI for reviews
In parallel with workforce changes, Meta employees are now using an internal AI chatbot called Metamate to help write their performance reviews. Similar to ChatGPT, the tool scans internal documents, notes, and feedback to summarise an employee’s achievements over the year.
Product director Joseph Spisak, who leads part of Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, described the chatbot as useful for compiling self-evaluations and project summaries. “When I prepare my review, I call Metamate — it finds my documents, lists my key accomplishments, and helps structure my feedback,” he said at a recent event.
However, several employees have raised concerns about reliability. Some said the AI lacks context on individual contributions, forcing them to manually adjust or rewrite parts of the draft. Many staff reportedly use it as a template generator rather than a full automation tool.

More on Meta’s AI transition
These developments highlight Meta’s broader reliance on AI not only in products but also in internal operations. The company has integrated machine learning into app development, performance tracking, and workflow management.
While the layoffs have prompted unease across teams, Meta maintains that the company’s long-term strategy remains centered on building foundational AI capabilities — from research to real-world integration — as competition with OpenAI and Google intensifies.
