Apple’s iOS 26.1 Beta is beginning to reveal interesting features that go beyond minor upgrades. According to early code findings, Apple may soon allow iPhones to better support third-party smartwatches, addressing a long-standing user demand.
The code highlights a new feature called Notification Forwarding, which would allow iPhone notifications to be relayed to a non-Apple device, including smartwatches. At present, notifications are primarily tied to the Apple Watch ecosystem. However, users may need to choose between mirroring notifications to an Apple Watch or to a third-party wearable, as the feature appears to only support one device at a time.
This move is significant as Apple has historically restricted smartwatch integration, keeping the Apple Watch tightly linked to iOS. The references to accessory pairing frameworks further suggest that broader compatibility is on the horizon.
However, this support may initially be limited to users in the European Union. The European Commission has set a deadline of June 2026 for Apple to enable interoperability, including notification support for third-party devices. Apple seems to be moving earlier than required, possibly to comply with digital market regulations and to avoid further scrutiny.
Alongside smartwatch integration, Apple is expected to expand Apple Intelligence and Live Translate to more languages. Other upcoming features being tested include automatic audio switching for third-party headphones, cross-platform sharing similar to AirDrop, and even payments via third-party accessories connected to an iPhone.
Whether Apple rolls out global support or keeps it limited to Europe remains unclear. However, if the change is enforced in the EU, it could pave the way for a worldwide rollout eventually.
If this feature launches, it could be a game-changer for iPhone users who prefer wearables from brands like Garmin, Fitbit or Samsung. It could also open up new competition in the smartwatch space, forcing Apple to make the Apple Watch more compelling to retain users.
