Shifa Rana, the daughter of the late and much-admired poet Munawwar Rana, has spoken out about what she describes as years of emotional and physical suffering within her marriage.
In a complaint filed at the Saadatganj police station in Lucknow, Shifa Rana accused her husband, Syed Mohammad Saqib, of pronouncing instant triple talaq and forcibly throwing her out of their home, leaving her separated from her children.
According to Shifa Rana, her ordeal began shortly after her marriage to Syed Mohammad Saqib, a resident of Karimganj, on 19 December 2013.
She told the police that her father, Munawwar Rana, had given gold and diamond jewellery along with Rs 10 lakh in cash at the time of the wedding. Despite this, she alleged that her husband and his family soon began demanding more dowry, eventually asking for Rs 20 lakh and a flat.
As per ETV Bharat, Shifa Rana stated that the pressure for additional dowry became a constant source of distress. She alleged that her in-laws repeatedly harassed her, creating an atmosphere of fear and instability in what was meant to be her marital home.
In an attempt to save the marriage and avoid further conflict, her family reportedly complied with several of these demands over time.
The situation, according to the complaint, reached a breaking point on 9 April 2025. Shifa Rana told police that she was verbally abused and brutally assaulted by Syed Mohammad Saqib. She alleged that, during the violent episode, he pronounced instant triple talaq in a fit of rage and forcibly pushed her out of the house.
Adding to her trauma, she claimed that her two children, Fawaz and Hayyam Fatima, were locked inside a room and she was not allowed to take them with her when she was expelled.

Shifa Rana further alleged that this was not the first time her life had been in danger, claiming that her husband had tried to kill her on several occasions in the past. These experiences, she said, left her living in constant fear and uncertainty.
Following her complaint, the police registered a First Information Report under the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.
Confirming the development, Saadatganj inspector Santosh Kumar Arya said, “We are thoroughly investigating every aspect of the case. Further legal action will be taken based on the evidence.”
