  • Rollout excludes Europe for now; coming later to that region

Google is expanding one of Gemini’s most useful capabilities to a wider audience. The company has started rolling out the ‘Past Chats’ feature to free users of the Gemini app around the world, marking a significant step in making personalised AI more accessible.

Previously limited to paid Google AI subscribers, the feature allows Gemini to reference earlier conversations when generating responses. In practical terms, that means users no longer need to repeat context every time they start a new chat.

Smarter continuity across conversations

With Past Chats enabled, Gemini can recall preferences, previously discussed topics and ongoing threads. For instance, if you were researching a subject in an earlier session, you do not have to explain how far you got when reopening the discussion. The assistant can continue from where you left off.

Google has also added transparency tools. Users can ask Gemini directly, “Did you use any info from past chats?” in follow-up prompts to understand how prior context influenced a response.

New Personal Context settings

The feature can be managed from a new “Personal context” page within Gemini settings. Here, users can enable or disable “Your past chats with Gemini.” Beneath that toggle, “Instructions for Gemini” remains available for setting broader behavioural preferences.

Importantly, the rollout currently excludes Europe, where the feature will arrive at a later date.

A bigger push toward personal AI

The expansion hints at Google’s broader ambitions for Gemini. The company has signalled that it plans to bring more advanced Personal Intelligence features to free users over time. That would allow Gemini to draw context from first-party apps such as Gmail and Photos, creating a more deeply integrated assistant experience.

For now, Past Chats represents a meaningful upgrade for free-tier users. It shifts Gemini from being a session-based chatbot to something closer to a persistent assistant that learns over time, within user-controlled settings.
