Google Chrome to drop macOS Monterey support from July 2026

From July 2026, Chrome will require macOS Ventura or newer, leaving users on older Macs without security fixes unless they upgrade their operating system or hardware.

  • Chrome 151 and later will require macOS 13 Ventura or newer
  • Older Macs limited to Monterey will lose Chrome updates and face security risks

Google has announced that future versions of its Chrome web browser will no longer support macOS 12 Monterey, marking another cutoff point for older Macs still in active use. According to a support document published by the company, Chrome 150 will be the final version compatible with Monterey. The next major release, Chrome 151, is expected to arrive towards the end of July 2026 and will require macOS 13 Ventura or newer.

While Chrome will continue to run on systems that remain on macOS Monterey, Google has warned that these installations will no longer receive updates of any kind. That includes security patches, bug fixes, and new features. Over time, this could expose users to vulnerabilities, particularly as web-based attacks increasingly target outdated browsers.

Google is advising Mac owners to upgrade to macOS Ventura in order to continue receiving Chrome updates. However, that option is not available to everyone. A number of Intel-based Macs are officially capped at macOS Monterey and cannot be updated further without unsupported workarounds.

No macOS Ventura for you

Apple dropped support for several older Macs when it released macOS Ventura, leaving a clear divide between devices that can move forward and those that cannot. iMac models released before 2017, MacBook Airs from before 2018, and MacBook Pro models older than the 2017 refresh are all limited to Monterey. The same applies to the 2016 MacBook, Mac mini models from before 2018, and the cylindrical “trash can” Mac Pro.

For owners of these machines, Google’s decision effectively puts Chrome on a countdown timer. Once Chrome 150 ages out, continuing to use the browser may carry increasing security risks. Websites may also gradually drop support for older browser versions, leading to compatibility issues over time.

Users stuck on macOS Monterey do still have options, though none are ideal. Switching to another browser that continues to support Monterey for longer could offer temporary relief, but those too are likely to follow a similar path eventually. Tools like OpenCore Legacy Patcher can enable newer versions of macOS on unsupported hardware, though this comes with its own risks and complexity.
