Google is adding a new productivity-focused feature to Google Docs that could change how people consume long-form documents. The company is introducing Gemini-powered Audio Summaries, allowing users to listen to a concise, AI-generated overview of a document instead of reading it.
Powered by Google Gemini, Audio Summaries create a short natural-language recap, usually just a couple of minutes long, that captures the core ideas of a document. Google positions the feature as a way to turn dense material such as product manuals, meeting minutes or quarterly business reports into an audio-first experience, similar to a brief podcast episode.
Once enabled, the feature gives users an overview of the entire document in spoken form. It is aimed at people who want to stay productive while multitasking, whether that means listening during a commute, while exercising, or while getting ready for work or class.
Audio Summaries are available in Google Docs on the web and can be accessed via Tools > Audio > Listen to document summary. After selecting the option, Gemini scans the document and generates a narrated summary. Users can also choose a “Listen to this tab” option, which reads out the full document for those who prefer an audio version of the complete text.
Google says the voices are designed to sound natural and similar to those used by the Gemini assistant. Playback controls include play, pause, timeline scrubbing and adjustable speed, along with different voice styles, giving users some flexibility over how the content sounds.
The feature is rolling out gradually, but there is a notable limitation. Audio Summaries are not available to free Google Docs users. Instead, access is restricted to paid plans, including Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and select AI add-ons such as Google AI Ultra and AI Pro.
