Elon Musk's X slashes subscription prices by up to 47% in India

Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has slashed the price of its X Premium subscription by up to 47 percent, in a likely effort to boost adoption in the world's second-largest internet market, Moneycontrol has learnt.

This is the first price change across all three pricing tiers - Basic, Premium, and Premium+ - since the service launched as Twitter Blue in India in February 2023. The company, however, has hiked the price of its topmost subscription tier, X Premium+, twice in the past year.

The price cut comes a day after Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) venture, xAI, released the next major version of its AI model, Grok 4. In March 2025, xAI acquired X in an all-stock transaction that valued the social media platform at $33 billion.

X Premium's Basic tier is currently available in India for Rs 170 per month or Rs 1,700 per year, down 30 percent from Rs 244 per month or Rs 2,591 per year. The Premium plan is now priced at Rs 427 per month or Rs 4,272 per year, a 34 percent dip from Rs 650 per month or Rs 6,800 per year earlier.

X Premium+ is now available for Rs 2,570 per month or Rs 26,400 per year, a 26 percent decline from Rs 3,470 per month or Rs 34,340 per year.

Prices for these tiers are higher on X's mobile apps, as the company passes on Google and Apple's in-app commission to consumers. The Premium plan is now priced at Rs 470 per month, a 47 percent dip from Rs 900 per month while the Premium+ plan is priced at Rs 3,000 per month, down 42 percent from Rs 5,130 per month. Moneycontrol observed that Premium+ plan on iOS is priced at Rs 5,000 per month.

Interestingly, the Basic plan remains priced the same on mobile apps as on the web, at Rs 170 per month.

The Basic tier gives users access to a limited number of premium features such as the ability to edit posts, longer posts and video uploads, reply prioritization, text formatting, and other app customisation options.

The Premium tier provides access to creator tools, including X Pro, analytics, and media studio, blue checkmark, reduced ads, and increased usage limits on Grok, among other benefits.

Premium+ gives users an ad-free experience across the algorithmic 'For You' or the chronological 'Following' feeds on the platform along with the largest reply boost. It also gives subscribers the ability to write articles, and access to real-time trends via Radar among others.

Over the years, X chief Elon Musk has sought to grow the company's subscription revenue to diversify its income streams beyond advertising, which makes up most of its revenue.

However, subscriptions still account for only a small portion of the business. According to estimates from app intelligence firm Appfigures, X grossed $16.5 million through in-app purchases on mobile devices as of December 2024.

Earlier this month, Linda Yaccarino stepped down as the chief executive officer of X after a two-year run.
