A short video of Elon Musk talking about the medical powers of Grok, his AI chatbot, has started trending again online and stirring up fresh debate. In the clip, originally shared in June 2025, Musk can be heard saying that Grok can help with medical diagnoses by analysing X-rays and MRI scans. He even says that in some cases Grok has done better than doctors. The video has resurfaced after Musk himself retweeted a post highlighting a dramatic example of Grok’s diagnostic ability.
The retweeted post told the story of a 49-year-old man from Norway, who went by the username “u/Tykjen” on Reddit. According to the story, the man suffered from severe abdominal pain for more than a day. When he first went to the emergency room, doctors told him it was likely acid reflux and gave him antacids. But the pain did not go away. Frustrated and still hurting, he turned to Grok.
He uploaded his symptoms and medical images to the AI, and Grok flagged a much more serious problem. The AI suggested a perforated ulcer or appendicitis and advised him to get a CT scan immediately. The man went back to the hospital, where scans confirmed he had a severely inflamed appendix that was close to bursting. He underwent emergency surgery and later reported a full recovery.
The story quickly gathered attention because it suggested that Grok may have helped spot a serious condition that was missed in the first hospital visit. Musk’s retweet brought it to an even wider audience, and people on social media began discussing what this might mean for the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Reactions were mixed and lively. Some users praised Grok for its speed and accuracy. One person pointed out that while patients can sometimes wait days for a radiologist’s report in a hospital, Grok delivers results in seconds. Others, however, were more skeptical. Some shared personal stories of AI misdiagnosis, while others made jokes about whether Grok could diagnose things like browser history.
The debate reflects a larger conversation about whether AI tools should play a role in medical diagnosis. Supporters say AI could help catch things that busy doctors might miss and could make fast, first-look scans more widely available. Critics worry that AI is not yet reliable enough and that it could lead people to rely too much on technology instead of real medical professionals.
For now, Grok’s sudden prominence in medical discussions shows how quickly AI applications are moving into areas once thought to be strictly human, and how opinions differ widely about whether that is a good thing or not.
