Netflix has quietly discontinued a long-standing feature that allowed users to cast content from its mobile apps to a wide range of smart TVs and streaming devices. The move marks a major change in how viewers interact with Netflix on second screens and is expected to affect millions of users globally who relied on phone-based playback control.

What feature Netflix has removed

Netflix has ended support for mobile casting on most devices that previously allowed users to start and control playback from their smartphones. Until recently, users could open the Netflix app on Android or iOS, tap the cast icon, and stream content directly to compatible TVs, streaming sticks, and consoles.

Casting now works only on limited hardware, including older Chromecast models without a physical remote, Nest Hub smart displays, and a small number of smart TVs from select manufacturers. For most modern smart TVs and streaming boxes, the cast icon has disappeared from the Netflix mobile app.

Why this change matters

For many users, casting was not just a convenience feature but a core part of their viewing routine. It allowed quick playback without navigating TV interfaces, enabled shared control in group settings, and made it easier to search and queue content using a phone keyboard.

The removal also affects accessibility and household use cases, where phones acted as simple remotes. Users must now rely on TV remotes or built-in Netflix apps, changing how playback is initiated and controlled.

How Netflix casting worked earlier

Netflix had spent over a decade building second-screen playback technology. The system allowed phones to function as controllers while the TV app handled streaming directly from Netflix’s servers. This approach worked across platforms, including smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming devices, making Netflix one of the most flexible apps for casting.

What users can do now

Users can still watch Netflix by opening the app directly on their smart TV, streaming box, or console and signing in. Those with supported Chromecast hardware can continue using casting, but most viewers will need to adjust to on-device navigation.

Netflix has not provided a detailed explanation for the decision, nor has it indicated whether broader casting support could return in the future. For now, the change signals a clear shift away from phone-controlled playback and toward a more device-centric viewing experience.
