European consumers, particularly in Denmark, appear to be pushing back against the United States following Donald Trump’s recent remarks about Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory. The response has taken a distinctly digital turn, with mobile apps that identify US-made products and suggest local alternatives seeing a sharp spike in downloads.
According to new data from market intelligence firm Appfigures, two apps, NonUSA and Made O’Meter, have climbed rapidly into the top 10 of the Danish App Store in recent days. The Danish App Store serves users in both Denmark and Greenland, and similar rankings have been observed on Google Play.
NonUSA, an iOS app built explicitly to support boycotts of American products, became the number one app on Wednesday. Just days earlier, it ranked 441st, before jumping to sixth place on Tuesday and then surging to the top. The app allows users to scan product barcodes to see where items are made and recommends Danish or regional alternatives where possible.
The app’s popularity is not limited to Denmark alone. Its top markets currently include Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland, suggesting a broader Nordic response rather than a purely national one.
Made O’Meter, available on both iOS and Android, has also seen renewed interest. While it has a smaller overall footprint, it has climbed to fifth place on the Danish App Store. Combined downloads across NonUSA on iOS and Made O’Meter on both iOS and Android have jumped by 867% over the past week compared to the previous seven-day period, according to Appfigures.
The surge comes amid reports of a grassroots consumer boycott in Denmark, with some residents cancelling planned US holidays and reassessing subscriptions to American streaming services such as Netflix. The movement appears to be driven less by organised campaigns and more by individual consumer choices amplified through social media and app discovery.
That said, the scale of Denmark’s app market should be kept in perspective. Appfigures notes that Denmark’s iOS App Store sees around 200,000 total downloads per day across all apps. In such a small market, a few thousand additional downloads can be enough to propel an app into the top rankings.
Interestingly, despite the boycott sentiment, several US-based apps remain prominent in Denmark’s charts, including ChatGPT, Microsoft Authenticator and shopping app Shop. Local apps, such as travel service Rejsekort, also feature heavily, possibly reflecting changes to travel plans.
