With just over a week to go until Apple’s March 4 “Special Experience” event, attention is turning to the expected debut of the iPhone 17e. The device will serve as the successor to February 2025’s iPhone 16e, Apple’s attempt to modernise its lower-cost iPhone strategy.
Design: Familiar Territory
The iPhone 17e is expected to retain the same 6.1-inch form factor, single-lens rear camera and minimalist black and white colour options. In other words, no dramatic visual overhaul. The aim appears to be refinement rather than reinvention.
Display: Still 60Hz
If rumours hold, Apple will stick with a 60Hz panel — even though the standard iPhone 17 gained 120Hz ProMotion last year. That would leave the 17e as Apple’s only new-generation iPhone without high-refresh support.
There is also little indication that always-on display technology will arrive. Without a 1-nit minimum brightness OLED panel, that feature remains reserved for Apple’s pricier models.
Dynamic Island: Maybe
One area where change is possible is the front design. The iPhone 16e retained the notch, but some leaks suggest the 17e could adopt the Dynamic Island, aligning it more closely with Apple’s flagship look. Other reports claim the notch will stay, so this remains uncertain.
Performance: A19 Chip
Under the hood, the 17e is expected to use Apple’s A19 chip — the same silicon found in the iPhone 17. Built on an upgraded 3-nanometre N3P process, it promises roughly 5 to 10 percent performance gains over the A18.
However, Apple may deploy a slightly downclocked version or reduce GPU cores, similar to the 16e strategy. RAM is expected to remain at 8GB, while higher-tier models continue with 12GB.
The A19 also brings upgrades to the image signal processor, display engine and Neural Engine, strengthening on-device AI performance.
MagSafe: A Welcome Addition
One of the most anticipated upgrades is MagSafe compatibility. The iPhone 16e lacked the magnetic ring, limiting it to 7.5W wireless charging. If the 17e adds MagSafe, charging speeds could jump to at least 15W, while unlocking compatibility with a wide ecosystem of accessories.
Camera: No Major Shake-Up
Expect the same 48-megapixel Wide rear camera and a 12-megapixel front-facing camera. Unlike flagship models, no Camera Control button or upgraded 18-megapixel selfie sensor is currently rumoured.
Connectivity: New Modem
The device is set to adopt Apple’s C1X modem, first introduced in the iPhone Air. Apple claims the C1X is up to twice as fast as the earlier C1 modem and more energy efficient than Qualcomm alternatives.
There is mixed reporting around whether Apple’s in-house “N1” Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip will make the cut, as cost considerations may keep it exclusive to higher-end devices.
Pricing and Launch
The iPhone 17e is expected to retain the Rs 59,999 starting price of its predecessor. With Apple’s March 4 event approaching, an announcement during that week appears likely.
