Apple is reportedly turning to Google for help as it races to upgrade Siri with more advanced artificial intelligence, signalling a deeper collaboration between the two tech giants than previously expected.
According to a report by The Verge, Apple has asked Google to explore the possibility of setting up dedicated servers to support a Gemini-powered version of Siri. The move is aimed at ensuring that the upgraded voice assistant meets Apple’s strict privacy standards while still benefiting from Google’s rapidly advancing AI models.
Apple had earlier confirmed in January that it would use Google’s Gemini models as part of its broader “Apple Intelligence” push. At the time, the company said these models would help power a more personalised Siri experience and other AI-driven features across its ecosystem. However, the details around how much Apple would rely on Google’s infrastructure remained unclear.
This latest development suggests Apple may lean more heavily on Google than initially indicated, especially as it tries to catch up with competitors in the AI space. Companies like Google and OpenAI have already made significant strides with conversational AI, putting pressure on Apple to deliver a smarter and more capable Siri.
One key question is where the data processing for this new Siri will actually happen. Apple has consistently emphasised its commitment to privacy, stating that its AI features will run either directly on devices or through its own “Private Cloud Compute” system. But reports now indicate that Apple’s in-house cloud setup may not be fully equipped to handle the scale required.
As noted by 9to5Mac, Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure is currently underutilised, operating at only about 10 percent of its capacity on average. This has reportedly led to pre-built Apple servers sitting unused in warehouses, raising questions about efficiency and readiness.
If Apple does move forward with Google-backed servers, it could mark a significant shift in strategy. While Apple would likely maintain tight control over user data and privacy safeguards, relying on Google’s cloud could help it roll out advanced AI features faster.
For users, this could mean a much smarter Siri in the near future, one that better understands context, offers more personalised responses, and competes more effectively with today’s leading AI assistants.
