Apple has released a new campaign to highlight Safari’s privacy and security features. The campaign includes a YouTube commercial, outdoor ads, digital ads and more. The ad takes a dig at other browsers and how they are always tracking user data and browsing habits.
In the commercial, security cameras are depicted as annoying birds and bats, hovering around smartphone users as they surf the web. These cameras — symbolic of website trackers — are omnipresent and intrusive. The ad mainly targets non-iPhone users, but towards the end, an iPhone user opens Safari, causing all the creepy cameras to explode mid-air.
Safari: Privacy features
Safari comes with Intelligent Tracking Prevention, which has helped protect Safari users from unwanted tracking by using on-device machine learning to stop trackers while allowing websites to function normally. To prevent this, whenever you visit a website, Safari presents a simplified version of your system configuration. Your Mac looks more like everyone else’s Mac, which dramatically reduces the ability of trackers to uniquely identify your device, as per Apple.
Your IP address is also hidden from trackers on Safari. Since IP address can be used to identify you across websites and sessions, and it can reveal your precise location, this is a handy feature to have. Also, Intelligent Tracking Prevention is on by default when you use Safari.
Safari also has link tracking protection. There are websites add extra information to their URLs in order to track users across other websites. Safari removes this information from the links that are shared in Messages and Mail. This information will also be removed from links in Safari Private Browsing.
Safari’s private browsing has also be updated and now gives greater protection against trackers as users browse the web and from people who might have access to their device. Advanced tracking and fingerprinting protections also help prevent websites from using the latest techniques to track or identify a user’s device.
