At a time when tech leaders are building some of the most powerful AI systems in the world, one of them is being surprisingly cautious at home.

Jack Clark, co-founder of AI company Anthropic, has said he does not allow his young daughter unrestricted access to YouTube. His reason is simple. The platform’s algorithm, he says, is something that “freaks him out.”

Speaking in a recent interview, Clark shared that while his toddler does watch some content, it is carefully controlled. She can watch a few selected shows, like Bluey, on a smart TV, but she does not get to explore YouTube freely or follow its endless stream of recommendations.

For Clark, the concern is not just about what children watch, but how platforms decide what to show next. YouTube’s recommendation system is designed to keep users engaged by constantly suggesting new videos. That is exactly what makes him uncomfortable.

He pointed out that once a child starts navigating the platform independently, it becomes harder to control what they might come across. Even at a young age, his daughter has already shown curiosity about YouTube, which he says will only grow over time.

Clark’s approach reflects a broader pattern seen among tech leaders. Many of them, despite working on cutting-edge products, tend to place limits on how much technology their own children can use. The concern is often not just about screen time, but about how these platforms are designed to capture attention.

At Anthropic, the company behind the AI assistant Claude, access to its tools is currently restricted to users aged 18 and above. Still, Clark acknowledged that children are likely to try and use such technologies anyway, which makes the need for safeguards even more important.

His comments come at a time when conversations around children, technology, and online safety are becoming more urgent. As AI tools and digital platforms become a bigger part of everyday life, parents are increasingly trying to find the right balance between access and control.

For Clark, that balance, for now, means keeping things simple at home. A few handpicked shows are fine. Letting the algorithm take over is not.
