Over the years, facial recognition tech — at least in public places — has always divided opinion. Critics argue that facial recognition tech for everyday use as there are many privacy concerns around surveillance. However, it looks Google is piloting facial recognition technology at one of its campus sites.

According to a report by CNBC, Google’s office in Kirland, Seattle is testing facial recognition on employees. As per the report, security cameras have been collecting and comparing employee images with those entering the campus. The idea is to keep a check on unauthorised people on the company premises.

The report also mentions that Google’s Security and Resilience Services (GSRS) team will keep a track of the data to identify people who may be a security risk to company.

Some employees express concern

A report by Business Insider mentions that some employees aren’t too thrilled with this move. Some called it a “little dystopian” whereas others are concerned about the facial data being stored.

There is no option to opt out of the facial screening system at the Kirkland office in Seattle. Google, however, as per the report, will not store the data and it will be “strictly for immediate use.”

Employees are also worried about the new security system being used as a tool to track employees’ attendance. However, Google has refuted those claims and said it doesn’t plan to do that, according to Business Insider.

A Google spokesperson told CNBC “For many years our security team has been testing and implementing new systems and protections to help keep our people and spaces as safe as possible.”

Enhanced security at Google campuses

Google has been enhancing security at its campuses, including the company headquarters in Mountain View, California. There have been a series of layoffs at Google and security has been beefed up. Furthermore, there have been protests at Google campuses as well.
