India's Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, recently revealed details of a conversation he had with former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli. The two met during a cricket event in Chennai, where Shah asked Kambli about the happiest moment of his life.
While Shah anticipated Kambli would highlight his Test double century or some other stellar knock as his most cherished memory, the 52-year-old surprised him by revealing that coaching young children brings him the greatest joy.
Sharing Kambli's reply, here's what Shah said at an event:
"I met Vinod Kambli during a cricket program in Chennai. He had retired by then, but at one point, he was considered a very good batter. I asked Vinod to tell me the time when he was happiest amid the many ups and downs that he had seen. I expected him to say that he was the happiest when he hit a double century. He replied, 'Sir, I won by beating many big names and broke several records, but even today, I am the happiest when I teach a young kid to play on the back foot.'."
Vinod Kambli debuted for Team India in 1991. He played 104 ODIs and 17 Tests for his country. Once hailed as India's next batting sensation, his career remains a story of immense talent and unfulfilled potential.
Kambli's health condition sparks worry among fans
Vinod Kambli recently appeared at a memorial event for Ramakant Acherekar. He struggled to talk during the event and looked weak which concerned fans about his health condition. Former India cricketer Balwinder Sandhu disclosed that Kapil Dev was ready to provide financial help to Kambli, but only if was willing to enter rehab.
"Kapil has told me clearly that if he wants to go to rehab, then we are willing to help him financially. However, he has to check into rehab himself first. Only if he does that, we are ready to foot the bill, irrespective of how long the treatment lasts," told Sandhu to TOI.
Despite the challenges, Kambli boasted an impressive Test batting average of 54.20. He holds the record as the fastest Indian to score 1,000 Test runs, achieving the milestone in just 14 innings. Additionally, he became the third player in Test cricket to register two consecutive double centuries.
