A well-known tigress of Pench Tiger Reserve, affectionately called “Langdi”, has died due to old age. This brought an end to the remarkable life of one of the reserve’s most resilient big cats. Forest officials confirmed that the tigress was around 18 years old.  She was found dead in the Karmajhiri range of Pench Tiger Reserve. In the wild, tigers rarely live beyond 15–16 years, making Langdi one of the oldest surviving tigresses in the region.

Why She Was Called “Langdi”?

The tigress earned the nickname “Langdi,” meaning “the one who limps,” because she had a deformity in one of her front paws since birth. The condition caused a noticeable limp while walking.

Despite this physical challenge, Langdi managed to survive and thrive in the harsh conditions of the wild. This is something that made her particularly admired by forest staff, wildlife experts and tourists. Her story became a symbol of strength and resilience in the animal kingdom.

A Key Contributor to the Tiger Population

Langdi was officially identified as PN-20 (or T-20) and was born around 2008 in the Pench landscape. During her lifetime, she gave birth to 10 cubs. Many have survived and established territories in and around the reserve.

Wildlife officials say her offspring have played an important role in strengthening the tiger population in Pench and nearby forests.

Struggles in Her Final Days

Forest officials said the tigress had been showing clear signs of aging in recent months. With reduced strength and hunting ability, she was increasingly finding it difficult to catch prey.

She was last spotted on March 6, after which forest teams began monitoring the area more closely. Soon after, her body was discovered inside the reserve.

A Symbol of Resilience

The officials conducted a post-mortem examination under the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The examination confirmed that the tigress died due to age-related causes and there were no signs of injury or foul play.

For years, Langdi remained one of the most recognizable and admired tigers in Pench Tiger Reserve. Her death marks the end of an era in the reserve, but her legacy will continue through the many cubs she left behind in the forests of Pench.
