  • Skyeton unveils world's first hydrogen-powered surveillance drone in Ukraine.
  • Raybird drone is quiet, low thermal and hard to detect by sensors.
  • Hydrogen fuel cells allow quieter, cleaner and longer flights with fewer emissions.

Scientists have unveiled the world’s first hydrogen-powered surveillance drone. The aircraft operates with an extremely low thermal signature. This makes it almost invisible to heat-detecting sensors. It represents a breakthrough in clean aviation technology. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity without burning fossil fuels. This reduces heat, noise and environmental impact significantly.

What Is the Raybird Drone?

Raybird is an advanced unmanned aerial vehicle powered by hydrogen. It uses clean fuel cell technology instead of traditional combustion engines. The drone is designed for long-duration and energy-efficient scientific flights. Its structure supports stable performance in challenging environmental conditions.

A Drone Powered By Hydrogen

The drone was developed by Ukrainian aerospace researchers. The Raybird hydrogen-powered UAV was developed by Skyeton. This is a Ukrainian aerospace company. This variant uses hydrogen fuel cell electric propulsion, generating electricity to power its motors. The development involved 2 years of laboratory testing and redesign work. This study helped to make the hydrogen fit in the system of the aircraft structure.

How Will This Drone Work?

The Raybird drone uses a hydrogen fuel cell power system. Hydrogen reacts with oxygen to generate electricity onboard. This powers the drone’s electric motors efficiently and quietly. No combustion occurs during energy production. This eliminates noisy engines and excessive thermal emissions. The system runs cooler than traditional propulsion technologies.

Features of the Raybird Drone

The hydrogen-powered Raybird weighs about 23 kg with a wingspan of 4.7 meters. It can carry a 10 kg payload of surveillance equipment. The drone cruises around 110 km/h and has about 12 hours endurance currently. Engineers aim to increase flight time to around 20 hours.

What Will This Hydrogen Drone Do?

The drone will fly long missions with very low heat output. It will operate quietly and at higher altitudes than normal drones. Its negligible thermal signature makes it hard to detect by sensors. The Raybird drone can carry radar and surveillance equipment for intelligence missions.

A Breakthrough in Science

Hydrogen-powered drones have existed in prototype form for years, but this is the first deployment in Ukraine. Being the world's first Hydrogen drone, this may shape future in technology and science. The focus remains on the unique tactical advantages of the hydrogen-electric powertrain. This hydrogen drone is undergoing codification for broader use across Ukraine’s defense forces.
