The Perseids are back—and while they remain a celestial favourite, this year’s conditions are far from ideal. Sky lovers hoping for a dazzling display may need to plan ahead or adjust expectations.
Meteor Peak Collides with Bright Moonlight
The Perseid meteor shower will run from 17 July to 23 August. This year, it reaches its peak on 12 and 13 August. However, a bright, waning gibbous moon will rise before midnight, washing out most of the night sky.
The moon will be 84% lit during the peak nights. Its light is expected to overpower all but the brightest shooting stars. Observing from dark-sky areas may not help much this time.
The Sturgeon Moon will be nearly full on 9 August. Its glare will linger through the peak, making the meteor display harder to catch. That means stargazers should look before or after the peak dates instead.
Better Viewing Ahead of Peak Nights
The best chance to catch the Perseids may come early. From 18 to 28 July, the moon will be much less disruptive. The last quarter moon on 18 July will rise late, while the new moon on 24 July ensures darker skies.
A crescent moon will follow and remain dim until 28 July. After that, the moon begins to brighten again, affecting visibility. Another short window may open after 16 August as the gibbous moon fades.
Though fewer meteors will streak across the sky, the conditions will be clearer. Those watching during early darkness may still catch a few meteors, especially under rural or mountain skies.
Perseids Known for Speed and Brilliance
The Perseids are caused by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. These meteors hit Earth’s atmosphere at nearly 60 kilometres per second. As they burn, they light up the sky with sharp, bright trails.
Although this year’s moon will steal some of the limelight, patient observers may still spot a few dazzling moments. Even under bright skies, a few Perseids should manage to break through.
