Iran’s sleeping volcano, Taftan show signs of awakening after 700,000 years

After 700,000 years of near silence, Iran’s Taftan volcano is showing signs of underground movement. Satellite data reveals rising ground, prompting scientists to closely monitor the ancient giant.

  • Iran's Taftan volcano shows ground uplift after 700,000 years of quiet.
  • Scientists say uplift signals underground movement, but no eruption is imminent.
  • Experts recommend closer monitoring of Taftan due to unusual geological changes.

For nearly 7 lakh years, it stayed quiet. No lava, no explosions just steam and silence. Now, Iran’s Taftan volcano is moving again, and scientists are watching closely.

Taftan volcano, located near the Iran–Pakistan border, has recently experienced measurable ground uplift. This is a geological change that can indicate pressure building beneath the Earth’s surface.

A Volcano That Refused to Die

Taftan rises from southeastern Iran, near the border with Pakistan. It has long been called a “sleeping giant.” While it never fully went extinct, its activity was limited to gentle gas and steam vents.

Satellite data reveal that parts of Taftan’s summit region have risen by approximately 9 centimetres over a short period. While this change may appear minor, volcanologists say such uplift can be a key early signal of underground movement.

A Long-Quiet Volcano

Taftan is often described as a “sleeping giant.” Although it has never been completely extinct, its recent history has been limited to weak gas emissions and steam vents, with no major eruptions recorded for nearly 700,000 years.

This long period of relative calm makes the current deformation particularly noteworthy. Scientists say it suggests the volcanic system beneath Taftan is still active, even if it remains far from erupting.

No Immediate Eruption Warning

Researchers emphasise that ground uplift alone does not mean an eruption is imminent. Many volcanoes inflate and deflate over time without producing lava or ash. At present, there have been no reports of increased seismic activity, ash emissions, or dangerous gas levels around Taftan. However, the unusual deformation has led experts to recommend closer observation.

Studying this Volcano really matters

Understanding how dormant volcanoes behave is crucial for improving eruption forecasts and reducing risk to nearby communities. Millions of people worldwide live near volcanic regions, and early warning systems rely on recognising subtle geological signals. Taftan’s slow movement offers researchers a valuable opportunity to study how long-quiet volcanoes may re-activate over time.

A Giant Under Observation

For now, Taftan remains calm on the surface. There are no visible eruptions, and daily life in surrounding areas continues as normal. But deep underground, the Earth is shifting. The signs of renewed activity by Taftan prompted scientists to increase monitoring efforts.
