Indian scientists have developed a breakthrough for long-distance quantum communication. PhotonSync stabilises photons in ordinary fibre, making quantum signals feasible. The technology promises secure, reliable quantum links over unprecedented distances.
It could transform research, defence and telecom networks across India. Quantum communication has long faced obstacles due to fragile photon states. The ordinary fibre introduces noise, disrupting delicate quantum information carried over distance.
What Exactly Happened?
Researchers tested a new system called PhotonSync on telecom fibres. It reduces phase noise and frequency instability in photons. Tests covered fibre spools up to 71 km and real urban networks. The system kept quantum signals coherent and usable for protocols. This marks a step toward practical, scalable quantum communication networks.
What Is PhotonSync?
PhotonSync was developed at IUCAA, Pune, in the PQM laboratory. Prof. Subhadeep De led the project with his expert team. Collaborators included Dr Stanley Johnson and JIIT, Noida researchers. It is a phase-coherent fibre system that synchronises photons in transit. PhotonSync turns ordinary telecom fibre into a stable quantum communication channel.
How PhotonSync Works?
PhotonSync creates a phase-coherent fibre link, actively correcting noise in real time. It synchronises photon phase and frequency to maintain quantum integrity. Tests show it reduces phase noise by about 47.5 dB reliably. Error rates drop significantly compared to conventional fibres without PhotonSync. The system works on existing fibre infrastructure, reducing cost and complexity.

Is There a Chance for Quantum Communication?
Yes, PhotonSync makes long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD) possible. It preserves quantum states even over hundreds of kilometres reliably. This allows secure communication without interception or hacking risks. It can support scientific, government, defence and financial applications securely. PhotonSync could enable a functional quantum internet in India soon.
Why This Study Matters In Quantum Research?
It overcomes one of the major obstacles in scalable quantum networks. Researchers can now use existing telecom fibres for advanced quantum experiments. It demonstrates India’s capability in cutting-edge quantum technology development. The breakthrough provides real data for long-distance quantum communication feasibility. It is a foundational step for the global quantum research roadmap.
