Significance of Ratha Saptami
Observed on the seventh day (Saptami) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Magha month, Ratha Saptami holds immense spiritual importance. It is believed that worshiping Lord Surya on this day is as powerful as performing charitable acts during a solar eclipse (Surya Grahan).
Devotees revere this occasion not just as a celestial celebration but as a pathway to purification. Ancient scriptures suggest that observing a fast and offering prayers on this day can absolve a person of seven types of sins - whether committed knowingly or unknowingly, in this life or previous ones, by speech, body or mind. Because of its association with vitality and well-being, the festival is also widely known as Arogya Saptami (Health Saptami).
Rituals: The path to health and prosperity
The central ritual of Ratha Saptami involves a holy bath taken during Arunodaya - the period of approximately 96 minutes (four Ghatis) before sunrise.
1. The Holy Bath (Snan):
It is strictly advised to take a bath during the Arunodaya period. While bathing in a natural water body like a river or canal is preferred, devotees may also bathe at home. This ritual acts as a shield against ailments and diseases, blessing the devotee with good health.
2. Arghyadan (Offering Water):
Following the bath, devotees worship the rising sun by performing Arghyadan. This involves standing and facing the sun while slowly pouring water from a small vessel (Kalash) with folded hands in a Namaskar Mudra.
3. Worship:
After the offering, a lamp (Deepak) lit with pure ghee is presented to the deity. Worship continues with camphor (Kapoor), incense (Dhup), and red flowers, which are favored by the Sun God.
Also known as Achala Saptami, this festival serves as a reminder of the sun's life-giving energy. By engaging in morning Snan, charity (Dan-Punya), and prayer, devotees seek the blessings of Lord Surya for longevity, prosperity, and a sin-free life. As the sun rises on January 25, it brings with it the promise of spiritual renewal and physical vitality for all who observe the traditions of Ratha Saptami.
