Ashtami Rohini 2025 Date: Check Time, Significance of Sri Krishna Jayanti in South India

Ashtami Rohini 2025: Also known as Sri Krishna Janmashtami, this year will be observed on Sunday, September 14. This sacred day marks the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. Unlike most regions of India, where Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated based on the Lunar Calendar, states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Karnataka follow the Solar Calendar and observe the festival as Ashtami Rohini.

Difference Between Lunar and Solar Calendar

In most years, the date of Krishna Janmashtami based on the lunar calendar and solar calendar differs only by one or two days. However, in some years, this difference may extend up to a month. That is why, while the rest of India celebrates Janmashtami on one day, devotees in South India observe Ashtami Rohini separately according to their calendar system.

Ashtami Rohini in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka

In Kerala, Janmashtami is popularly called Ashtami Rohini. People observe fasts, visit temples, chant Krishna bhajans, and offer prayers. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the festival holds equal importance and is celebrated with devotional fervor.

Two of the most prominent celebrations take place at:

  • Udupi Sri Krishna Temple (Karnataka)
  • Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple (Kerala)

These temples attract thousands of devotees on Ashtami Rohini, making it one of the most vibrant Krishna festivals in South India. Ashtami Rohini 2025 is not just a day of celebration but also a reminder of Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita. Devotees engage in prayers, fasting, chanting, and visiting temples to seek blessings of Lord Krishna for peace, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
