With Urban Oasis, Italian product designer Andrea Mangone creates a micro farm for city homes. Italy-based product designer Andrea Mangone’s Urban Oasis is an urban farming kit that makes growing vegetables (such as lettuce, cabbage, cherry tomatoes and basil) on the balcony a fun and educative experience. Typically, the product includes a pot, dried soil and fertilizer, gardening tools, seeds and a watering can. A perfect example of eco-sustainability, it is made of materials such as bamboo and rice hull fibres composite, cork agglomerate, recycled cardboard and natural wood. The minimalistic product package is the pot itself, with all the accessories neatly organized inside and the tray doubling up as a lid. Through this small initiative, Andrea hopes to provide a constant supply of high quality organic food, an educative experience for kids and adults, and an aesthetic product for home interiors. On a larger scale, he intends to encourage the practice of urban farming which would not only lower the amount of packaged food consumption but also lower levels of Co2 produced due to a decrease in emissions related to food transportation.
