Reflecting on the period following the diagnosis, Seema Kamath described the experience as emotionally overwhelming.

Zerodha founder and chief executive officer Nithin Kamath on Sunday used social media to draw attention to disability inclusion at the Tata Mumbai Marathon while also sharing a personal milestone related to his wife’s recovery from cancer.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Kamath wrote, “The excitement and enthusiasm among people with disabilities running the Tata Mumbai Marathon today were beyond words. Makes you think about what right you have to complain about anything in life.”

He added, “On a personal note, Seema (wife, see the link in comments) ran 10km in ~57 minutes, about 2.5 years after surviving cancer.”

Along with photographs from the marathon, Kamath shared a link in the comments to a personal blog authored by his wife, Seema Kamath, in which she documented her diagnosis, treatment and recovery with the aim of increasing awareness around breast cancer and early screening. The blog is titled, “I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer!”

In the blog, Seema Kamath described being diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in November 2021, despite having no outward symptoms and maintaining what she described as a highly disciplined fitness routine. “I am Seema, and I am, or maybe was the healthiest and fittest person I knew. I absolutely did everything possible to be healthy and I thought nothing could physically slow me down until I was diagnosed with breast cancer in Nov 2021,” she wrote.

She explained that the cancer was detected during a routine mammogram conducted as part of regular full-body health check-ups. The scan identified a small lump in her right breast, which was subsequently confirmed through a biopsy and PET scan.

Reflecting on the period following the diagnosis, Seema described the experience as emotionally overwhelming. “I was in shock, and maybe I am still. Until a couple of weeks ago, I hadn’t spoken about my cancer to anyone apart from my immediate family and a few friends,” she wrote. She added that reluctance to speak publicly stemmed partly from stigma, stating, “Like mental illness, cancer is also a taboo in our country.”

Her treatment included a mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which she referred to as an “emotional roller coaster.” In the blog, she stressed that doctors repeatedly underlined the importance of routine screening, even for individuals who consider themselves fit. “Today, cancer is curable unless it is too late before it is spotted,” she wrote.

Seema Kamath also used the platform to highlight the role of health insurance, noting that serious illnesses can take a physical, mental and financial toll. She further emphasised the importance of family and social support during treatment.

“If you have friends or family who are going through serious health issues, you should do whatever to make them feel normal and help them gain the courage to look forward to a better future,” she wrote, adding, “Like I mentioned earlier, the mind usually gives up before the body and the support system should do its best to not let that happen.”
