A Malaysian woman has been receiving a lot of sympathy online after she revealed that her boss demanded she share her live location while on annual leave, apparently to prove she was actually on holiday. The shocking request, which extended to overseas travel, was shared by the woman, identified as @_nnadrahhh, on a social media platform on June 10, prompting her to question other users if such a demand was "normal."
Her boss allegedly told her this was a "new rule" of the company, threatening to mark employees "absent" if they failed to provide their live location, even with approved annual leave. She further alleged that her boss would hold leave applications pending until the location was shared.
Despite travelling to a Malaysian island, the woman, who did not name her employer, chose not to share her location, infuriated by the request. She subsequently received numerous calls from her boss.
Responding to other social media users, @_nnadrahhh said the company asks for live location information even during unpaid and sick leave, and added that she would report the company to the Malaysian Department of Labour if they did it again.
Her post quickly went viral, attracting hundreds of comments condemning the employer's actions. “This is not normal. Your boss is crazy,” SCMP quoted one user as saying. Another added: “How can your boss breach your privacy like that? Staff can do whatever they want during their annual leave.” A third commenter sarcastically noted, “They can only ask for your location when they sponsor your trips.” Some even asked her to "quit and get a new job."
