A simple midnight observation has sparked a wider conversation about nightlife in Indian cities. After seeing crowds walking and spending time outdoors in Ahmedabad well past midnight, a Bengaluru man shared his experience online.
The discussion began when Kartik Kannan posted photos on X (formerly Twitter) showing a busy plaza in Ahmedabad at around 1 am. The images captured people strolling through the area and spending time outside even late at night.
Sharing his first impression of the city at that hour, Kannan spoke about how lively the place felt even after midnight. In his post, he wrote, “Ahmedabad is buzzing for 1 AM with a very festive feel.”
He also compared the scene with what he believes is missing in Bengaluru. According to him, the city does not have a central public space where people can comfortably walk around late at night. “I wish we had a place in Bangalore where we could walk out at midnight around a central place without police breathing down your neck,” he wrote.
The post quickly gained attention online and sparked a discussion among users. Many began comparing the nightlife culture and public spaces of the two cities.
Many people responded by sharing their own experiences of visiting Ahmedabad. One user described the atmosphere they noticed during their visits to the city. The user wrote, “I have been to Ahmedabad so many times, found it to be very safe and chilled out place. I rarely drink so I love the vibe of people and families enjoying without getting drunk unlike in other cites where enjoyment is linked to drinking. The relatively non availability of liquor and not having a bar at every corner also makes the city and its roads much safer than any other city.”
The same user also spoke about the culture of the people and how it encourages social gatherings and food outings, “Gujjus are fun loving people and hence you can see people enjoying everywhere. I had seen the same vibe in cites like Rajkot as well. Btw great vegetarian food culture in every city!”
Other users also shared similar opinions about the city’s late-night energy. Some said Ahmedabad remains lively even during the late hours of the night. One person spoke about the availability of food spots and how active the city feels after midnight. The user wrote, “Ahemdabad is superb. City is awake entire night and so many good places to eat even at midnight.”
A user wrote, “Yes absolutely, there is marine drive in mumbai too. Walking in places like this, makes you feel safe by inflicting a feeling of belonging, as seeing more people doing the same thing and enjoying is a very special feeling. Bangalore doesnt have one thing like this. No cubbon park, Lalbagh can match this.”

While many praised Ahmedabad, several users also defended Bengaluru and pointed out that the city still has areas where people gather late at night.
One user suggested a well-known location that often attracts visitors during the evening, “Come to church street.”
Others also spoke about Bengaluru’s earlier years, when certain areas used to remain busy even late at night. A user recalled, “Brigade road used to be that place, buzzing with life at 1 AM. Not quite sure how it is now.”
One user described the experience of being outside in the city before the daily rush begins, “That 4 AM Bengaluru air is a whole mood, macha. The crisp chill mixed with roasting beans is pure magic. It’s the city’s soul showing up before the traffic does...serenity and aura in every breath.”
