Friday the 13th has an oddly powerful hold on popular imagination. Even people who do not really believe in bad luck tend to pause for a second when they notice the date on the calendar. There is something about that combination of a Friday and the number 13 that has travelled across generations, films and cultures.

The discomfort with the number 13 goes back centuries. In Christian tradition, Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, is often described as the 13th guest at the Last Supper. The crucifixion of Jesus is also believed to have taken place on a Friday. Over time, those two strands merged into a broader superstition that the pairing of Friday and the number 13 was particularly ominous. Some historians also point to Friday, October 13, 1307, when King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar. While scholars debate how directly this event shaped the superstition, it has become part of the story that surrounds the date.

The fear is so widespread that it even has a formal name: paraskevidekatriaphobia. Psychologists generally describe it as a learned cultural belief rather than something rooted in evidence. Studies that have looked at accident rates, hospital admissions or stock market performance on Friday the 13th have not found consistent proof that the day is objectively more dangerous. In other words, the fear tends to be psychological, not statistical.

Yet the superstition has influenced real world behaviour. Many hotels skip a 13th floor. Some airlines avoid a row 13. In a few countries, major deals or surgeries are quietly rescheduled if they fall on the date. Popular culture has only reinforced the image. The long running Friday the 13th horror franchise cemented the idea that the day is unlucky, especially in Western countries.

In 2026, however, there is only one Friday the 13th. It falls in February. Unlike some years that see the date two or even three times, 2026 offers just this single appearance. The structure of the Gregorian calendar ensures that every year has at least one Friday the 13th, but how many times it occurs depends on how the days line up, especially around leap years.

For most people today, Friday the 13th is less about genuine fear and more about folklore. It is a reminder of how stories and beliefs can shape behaviour long after

their origins fade. When February 13, 2026 arrives, it will likely pass like any other day for most of us, even if a few jokes about bad luck make the rounds.
