A man from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh was in for a surprise after experiencing severe abdominal pain. 46-year-old Rajgir Mistri underwent a hernia operation that revealed an unexpected aspect of his anatomy.
Mistri, a father of two, sought medical help after suffering from abdominal pain. An ultrasound initially indicated a mass in his lower abdomen, which was suspected to be causing his hernia.
Dr Narendra Dev, a professor at BRD Medical College, noted that the ultrasound showed a hernia. However, during the surgery to address the hernia, Dr Dev and his team discovered that the mass was, in fact, an underdeveloped uterus, with an adjacent ovary also present, according to a report in India Today.
Dr Dev explained, “What was initially diagnosed as a hernia turned out to be a piece of underdeveloped female reproductive tissue. This anomaly is a rare birth deformity where male anatomy can contain female reproductive organs.”
Despite the presence of these organs, Mistri exhibited no physical characteristics typically associated with female reproductive systems. Dr Dev confirmed that the condition did not affect Mistri's daily life or functions beyond the hernia.
Meanwhile, following the surgery, Mistri recovered well and is in good health.
The condition described in Rajgir Mistri's case appears to be a form of persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) or a related anomaly.
Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome is a rare genetic condition affecting males, where there is an abnormal persistence of female reproductive structures despite the presence of male sexual characteristics. It results from a failure in the normal regression of Müllerian ducts during fetal development.
