Celebrations turned into chaos in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, when a dispute over the bride’s pet dog escalated into a violent clash between the two families. What was meant to be a joyful wedding ended with injuries, panic among guests, and the bride deciding to call off the marriage.
As reported by India Today, the incident took place on Wednesday night at a guest house in the Khaga Kotwali area. The bride’s family had travelled from Prayagraj by bus and private vehicles, while the groom’s side arrived with a traditional wedding procession. The early ceremonies, including the exchange of garlands, went smoothly.
The groom, Sumit Kesharwani, said that he and the bride had been in a relationship and had previously eloped to marry in an Arya Samaj ceremony in Kanpur. He added that after discussions, the bride’s family had agreed to formally celebrate the marriage with a larger ceremony in Fatehpur.
Trouble began around 4 am, during the jewellery presentation ritual. The bride’s pet dog, tied a short distance away by her family, started barking. “Irritated by the disturbance, a young man from the groom’s side beat the dog,” witnesses said. The bride’s family strongly objected, and the argument quickly turned into a physical fight.
According to eyewitnesses, sticks and chairs were used during the clash. Three members of the bride’s family, Shubham Gupta, Rishabh Kesarwani, and Sangeeta Devi, suffered head injuries. A few members of the groom’s family also had minor injuries. Many guests ran away when the situation became violent.
The police were called and arrived at the guest house. They stopped the wedding rituals and took both families to the Khaga police station. The injured were treated at the Central Health Center before returning to Prayagraj. On Thursday, both families met again at the police station, with local residents present to witness the discussions.
During questioning, the bride made it clear that she did not want to go ahead with the marriage. A panchayat was then held between senior members of both families. Gifts and money exchanged during the wedding were returned, and both sides reached an agreement. No formal complaint was filed, and neither family pursued legal action.
