Sridhar Vembu shares 5-step framework to prevent AI from taking white collar jobs: 'I'm in stage 1 and 2'

The Zoho co‑founder's response was prompted by a professor from the London School of Economics who argued for cautious, conviction‑based decision‑making especially at workplaces affected by AI.

Zoho co‑founder Sridhar Vembu says leaders must stay open‑minded and avoid rigid conclusions as AI evolves.

Zoho co‑founder Sridhar Vembu shared his five‑step framework for thinking about AI’s impact on white‑collar jobs, after reacting to a post by Luis Garicano, a professor at the London School of Economics. Garicano argued that white‑collar jobs will not disappear soon because many roles involve messy, human‑driven work that cannot be automated.

He opined that AI may automate some tasks, but not entire roles, because organisations depend on humans to handle exceptions, resolve disputes, and carry authority. Responding to this, Vembu said the post makes a strong case against claims that most white‑collar tasks will be automated quickly.

Step 1: Keep an open mind

Vembu said the first step is to stay open to all kinds of information—both arguments that say AI will replace jobs and those that say it will not.

Step 2: Form opinions, but hold them lightly

He said people should form early opinions but stay ready to revise them. In fast‑changing times, he added, leaders must be willing to make quick U‑turns

Step 3: Let convictions form naturally

According to Vembu, convictions should develop slowly. They cannot be forced or “bought.” They should come from within, after enough learning and reflection. "Over time, the opinions should solidify into convictions, but never force them. You cannot 'buy' a conviction, it has to come from within," the Zoho co-founder said.

Step 4: Do not mix ego with conviction

He warned that once the ego becomes attached to a belief, the belief turns into dogma. He said this is dangerous, especially when dealing with new technologies like AI.

Step 5: Act when convictions are clear

Vembu said strong convictions must lead to action. At the same time, action without conviction is pointless. He stressed that both must align.

Still in early stages: Vembu

"I am in stage 1 and 2 on how AI will impact our company and jobs," Vembu said, adding that he is not ready to make firm predictions.
