A 37-year-old Spanish streamer, Sergio Jimenez, died after allegedly consuming drugs during a private New Year’s Eve livestream, a case that has sparked renewed concern over extreme online challenges, according to a report by People.

The report further said that Jimenez, who is popularly known online as Sancho or Sssanchopanza on streaming platforms such as Kick and Twitch, was allegedly taking part in paid yet high-risk challenges during a private broadcast.

These challenges reportedly involved consuming alcohol and cocaine in exchange for money. According to People, Jimenez’s mother, Teresa, who lived with him, discovered him unresponsive in his bedroom in the early hours of January 1. She also reportedly told investigators that she woke up shortly before 2 am to use the bathroom and noticed the door to her son’s room was open. When she called out to him and received no response, she attempted to enter the room but was unable to do so because clothes or other items were scattered across the floor, blocking her way.

In a YouTube livestream on January 4, fellow streamer Simon Perez claimed that Jimenez had consumed around six grams of cocaine on the night of his death. Pérez also alleged that he had spoken to Jimenez’s brother, who said the streamer had been drinking whiskey during his final livestream, People reported.

Following the incident, Catalonia’s police force, Mossos d'Esquadra, launched an investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. While authorities have not released official details, the police later shared a video on social media warning people against participating in dangerous viral challenges.

In the video, an officer cautioned that such online trends could seriously endanger lives, harm physical and mental health, and leave lasting consequences due to one’s digital footprint, including damage to career and academic prospects.
