Sam Altman and Dario Amodei moment at AI summit triggers lobster claw meme online

A surreal lobster claw meme shared by ChatGPT’s social media account added fuel to speculation about rivalry between the two leading AI firms.

What was meant to be a routine show of unity at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi briefly turned into an internet spectacle, after a moment of visible awkwardness between OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei.

During a group photo on stage, leaders linked hands and raised them together as Narendra Modi stood at the centre. But Altman and Amodei, positioned next to each other, broke from the choreography. Instead of clasping hands, both raised their fists independently creating a brief but noticeable moment that cameras quickly picked up.

Altman later addressed the incident, saying he was unsure of what was expected. Speaking to Moneycontrol, he explained that when PM Modi lifted his hand, he momentarily froze, unsure whether to hold hands or simply raise his arm. The explanation, however, did little to slow the internet’s curiosity.

Within hours, clips of the moment spread rapidly across social media. Viewers dissected body language frame by frame, some noting that Altman appeared to slightly lean toward Amodei, while others pointed out the lack of eye contact and the clear physical gap between the two for several seconds.

The official ChatGPT social media account joined the conversation with a surreal, captionless image edit that pushed the speculation further. The visual showed PM Modi raising his arm while Altman stood beside him with giant, glowing red lobster claws replacing his hands. One claw, facing Modi, was tightly shut. The other, angled toward Amodei, appeared open and slightly extended.

The post instantly went viral.

Online users read the imagery as anything but random. In internet culture, claws and lobsters often symbolise power, defensiveness, and competition. Many interpreted the image as a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment that the awkwardness on stage may have reflected more than simple confusion.

Comments poured in. One user joked, “ChatGPT and Claude are fighting, but not with hands, with prompts.” Another quipped, “Rename it OpenClawd and let Claude try suing again.”

The symbolism resonated because Altman and Amodei are not just peers, they are rivals. Amodei was once part of OpenAI’s leadership before leaving to co-found Anthropic, positioning it as a direct competitor to OpenAI. While both companies publicly stress AI safety and global benefit, they differ sharply in philosophy, particularly around deployment speed, safeguards, and commercial openness.
