A newly launched retreat in Malaysia that offers a retirement-style living arrangement for young adults has received a strong response, with all available places reportedly booked within its first month of operation.

The facility, described as the country’s first “youth retirement home”, is located in Gopeng, Perak, and charges a monthly fee of RM2,000, which is approximately Rs 46,000. According to The Rakyat Post, the retreat spans eight acres and is intended as a temporary residential option for young people experiencing stress linked to work, living costs and housing pressures.

Residents are provided with accommodation and daily meals, with the space designed to offer a quiet and low-demand environment. The retreat does not follow a fixed schedule or structured programme, and there are no mandatory activities, workshops or productivity routines. Those staying at the facility are free to determine their own daily pace, including sleep, leisure and participation in light activities such as gardening.

The founder of the retreat has not been publicly identified. However, reports state that his family operates a conventional nursing home in Ipoh. Rather than continuing in that line of work, he chose to repurpose land owned by his parents to develop a residential space aimed at young adults. The idea was informed by the belief that rest, care and recovery should not be limited to older age groups.

The concept has drawn attention particularly among Gen Z and younger millennials, many of whom are reassessing traditional expectations around long working hours, career progression and financial pressure. The retreat has been framed as a short-term option rather than a permanent withdrawal from employment or education.

The philosophy associated with the initiative has been linked online to the concept of tang ping, a term originating in China that translates as “lying flat”. The idea is commonly understood as a form of disengagement from intense work culture and economic competition, advocating reduced ambition and slower living.

Reactions on social media have been divided. Supporters have described the retreat as a practical response to growing mental health concerns and burnout among young people. Others have questioned whether such facilities risk encouraging avoidance of long-term responsibilities.

Despite the criticism, demand for the Gopeng retreat appears to be strong. The facility, which is listed on Facebook as a “retirement and assisted living” space, has confirmed that all places for its initial month are fully booked, indicating significant interest in alternative approaches to managing work-related stress.
