Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Indian Gen Z for embracing the emerging trend of “bhajan-clubbing,” calling it a refreshing example of how young people are reshaping traditional culture for the modern age. Speaking during the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said it was heartening to see youngsters turning devotional music into a vibrant, shared cultural experience that is also finding resonance on social media.
Our Gen-Z is taking to Bhajan Clubbing...it is spirituality and modernity merging beautifully, particularly keeping in mind the sanctity of the Bhajans. #MannKiBaatpic.twitter.com/AIG4K55bOr— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) January 25, 2026
Modi noted that he had come across several online videos showing young crowds gathering in large numbers to sing bhajans with devotion and enthusiasm. He compared these gatherings to global music concerts, saying the scale, energy and participation were no less impressive. What stood out to him, he added, was how India’s youth were confidently celebrating their own cultural roots and presenting them in a contemporary, relatable format.
What happens inside bhajan-clubbing?
Bhajan-clubbing is a relatively new cultural phenomenon gaining traction in urban India, especially in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune. It brings together the spiritual essence of traditional bhajans and the immersive atmosphere of modern music events. Devotional songs are often performed live or reworked with elements like electronic beats, lo-fi sounds or ambient music, creating a soothing yet engaging experience.
Unlike conventional nightlife, these events are usually alcohol-free and held in cafes, cultural venues, roof tops or early-evening club settings in major cities. Participants chant, sway and occasionally dance, but the emphasis remains on calm, collective energy rather than frenzy. There are instances where many such shows saw huge demand and went house full hours after opening the bookings.
For many Gen Z participants, bhajan-clubbing is said to be less about organised religion and more about mindfulness, community and emotional balance. With warm lighting, minimal phone usage and an inclusive mood, the trend reflects a broader shift among young Indians.
